Lunettes Pour Tous is a French optical retailer that makes glasses in about ten minutes, in store. I joined as a developer in 2016 and have led its technology since 2017.
Our point of sale, ERP and lab tools are built in-house. I write about why, and about what changes when software has to work in a store.

Build what makes you different.
Off-the-shelf software is built for the average company. The tools that carry your own way of working, how a store sells and how a lab makes a pair, are worth owning. AI is lowering the cost of building them every month, which moves the line between build and buy further than most companies realise.

Right on Average
AI we do not yet master pulls companies in two opposite directions: toward software nobody owns, and toward ideas everybody shares. The first is an engineering problem. The second is a strategic one, and it is the one we are least prepared for.
